Get that Coat Closet Under Control!

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

The majority of people will find they use their coat closets to store a number of different things as well as coats. This can become rather unorganized and muddled as time goes on. It will become more and more jumbled over time and can leave you wanting to tidy it but wondering how. It will just mount up until there is no longer any room left to store anything and the task of cleaning it up will seem impossible. The following are some tips on how to lessen the hassle and get started on completing this task.

A good place to start is to actually make a list of the things you dislike about the coat closet. Are you overly frustrated by the growing pile of footwear? Do you have to pull almost everything out to find a matching pair of shoes? Are wet snow boots piled on to the mountain of shoes? This can leave you with a mildew smell that can permeate everything in the closet, including your nice, wool coats. Perhaps you have resorted to plastic drawers in the past and are now finding that you can’t remember what’s in them, and can’t open them enough to see.

Lots of us have heavy coats or jackets that occupy extra room; if your ceilings are high, you can add another layer of hanging storage for these or other items. Consider purchasing an inexpensive hanger “grabber”–a long, adjustable pole designed to help you reach items hanging on the upper level of your closet. The grabber is easy to use and gives you access to those high places, potentially increasing your storage area twofold.

If most of your coats are short, or children’s coats, you can even use two bars with a ceiling that is only eight feet. Perhaps coats are not the challenge, but you find that you simply have run out of space for shoes, purses, scarves and other items that can be folded. When this is the case, you may want to consider placing shorter bars on the sides of the closet, and then using the back wall for shelving or drawers. Don’t forget the benefit of hook for items that could be hung up and moved off the floor such as tote bags and umbrellas.

It’s perfectly fine to have drawers in your closet–just make sure they’re constructed of a transparent material like clear plastic or acrylic so that you can instantly see what they contain. Keep like objects such as gloves or mittens from getting separated by keeping them in bins or baskets. Vacuum storage bags are a lifesaver when you need to stow bulky items like blankets or quilts in limited space. Simply use your vacuum cleaner to suck the air out, and watch your down comforter shrink to a third of its original size!

Hangars made of cedar wood will help keep problems like dampness, unpleasant scents, and mildew under control. Reorganizing will save you a ton of time and energy in the long run.
