Why It Is Important To Use Decals and Signs Around Your Home

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Advertise that you have an alarm system. I have mentioned this before, but it is important enough to be repeated. Alarm systems work very well at keeping burglars away from your home.

No one wants to be the target of a burglary. No one wants to be threatened by criminals in their home. An alarm system is a security tool that is meant to ward off thieves to keep these types of situations from happening.

Alarm systems work very well at identifying break-ins. They also alert your security company, who in turn immediately notify the police of a break in. Why then would it be important to advertise that you have a security system if it would do just fine on its own?

The answer is you do not want a break-in from being attempted in the first place. You want to keep thieves from even trying to enter your home. Advertising that your home is protected will normally stop burglars from trying.

Burglars usually stake out the neighborhoods they are thinking of breaking in to, and a sign posted in the front yard is an easy warning sign for them to look out for. Home security companies will issue security signs and window decals for this purpose. Decals and signs are an effective deterrent and do a great job of letting the community know that you have a security network set up in your home.

Burglars will easily pick homes that do not have security systems in place already. No criminal actually wants to get caught. Why try to burglarize a home with home protection when they can easily break in to a home that does not have a home security system?

Decals and signs also are low cost, since they are provided by your security company when you sign up with them. They are very simple and easy to install. Little effort or time needs to be used to place decals and signs around your home.

The point of decals are to have them be seen, so take that in to consideration when placing them around your home. It is especially important to place them on windows near your front and back doors, and your front windows. If the decals cannot be easily spotted from a distance consider moving them to a different area where they can be seen.

Home Security Scams

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

While most burglars prefer to break in to homes while individuals are away from the home, that does not stop some people. A lot of people do not remember to use home security practices even while they re home. The following are excerpts from various news articles regarding home invasions that have happened while homeowners have been inside their homes. Almost all of these situations happened when home security measures were not taken ahead of time.

Unsuspecting Female Approach – An article in the Shreveport Times on March 3, 2006 shared a home invasion technique used on a man named Charlie Henry. A few men stopped by his home to ask him where someone lived. A week later, he got another knock on the door by a woman asking if he would mind letting her get a drink of water. As soon as he opened the door to let her in, the three men who had stopped by the week before stormed into his home after her.

In the New York Times, a sad story was shared in November 2007. A man, who was recently released for sexual assault from prison, saw a newspaper article with a picture of an 11 year old boy and made him his next target. “He gained the confidence of the family by claiming he was with the newspaper and was writing an article about the boy.” Simply claiming to be a newspaper reporter allowed him entrance in to the home. The boy was tragically assaulted and murdered by the man.

Police Scam – To show the lack of home security measures that are taken during the day, and to show how easily people fall for home security scams during an Oprah show a male staff member went around to 100 different homes in the area. He wore a hidden camera and pretended to be a police detective. When the door was opened he showed them a very fake police ID tag that was on ordinary paper and typed on a typewriter. Surprisingly, every single door invited him inside.

Some people choose to distract you to gain entrance into your home. The Norwich Evening News reported a story of a set of burglaries that took place when the homeowner got a panicked phone call telling them there was an emergency, such as an explosion down the street. While the homeowner went outside to investigate the explosion the burglar gained entrance inside their unlocked door.

Name Scam – In Louisville in 2004, WAVE3-TV reported a home security scam using the homeowner’s personal information against them. Someone would knock on the door calling out the homeowners first name. Without thinking about home security they would unlock the door and be greeted with a shotgun in their face.

Crying Child Technique: Another United Kingdom article from the Teeside Evening Gazette, from August 2004, shared this unconventional scam: Detectives are hunting a gang using a tearful boy and the tale of a lost hamster to breach the home security of pensioners. The cruel con involves the youngster knocking on victims’ doors then tearfully claiming his pet has wandered into their garden. While the householder helps the boy search for the phantom pet, the boy’s adult accomplice enters the property and rifles the house.

We do not share these with you to scare you, but just to make you aware how important it is to remember safety guidelines, even when the situation seems innocent enough. All of these scams could have easily been avoided had security measures been taken to protect the home and the people inside it. Security scams take advantage of people who are unsuspecting and do not have the safety mindset at the time. In our next article we will share tips on how to prevent being taken advantage of by those trying to pull these types of scams on your or anyone in your family.

How Well Do Home Security alarm Systems Work?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

How well do home security systems work? Do they actually do anything to protect your home? Do I even need a home alarm?

The answer will depend on several factors. The most important factor is where you decide to get your security system from. Your security company has the most impact on whether or not your security system will be reliable or helpful in the protection of your home, depending on the system they use.

Most security systems on the market work well in protecting homes. They protect the home in case of burglaries and break-ins. They also are able to serve more than one function, such as alerting you of possible fires and gas leaks if you install fire and gas detectors.

Security systems are a wonderful deterrent to criminals. If a burglar knows your home has an alarm they usually avoid the home. Most people who know they have a good chance of being caught will avoid that route.

To advertise that you have an alarm your security company will issue you security decals and signs to place around your home. I’ve known people who do not place them up in their windows because they feel they look tacky. While that may be true, security decals have been proven to add to home security. Because alarms do such a good job at scaring off potential burglars, many people use decals around their home even when they do not have a security alarm.

An alarm system drastically cuts down the amount of time a burglar has in your home, and raises the chances that they will get caught. An alarm automatically goes off, alerting your security company who is monitoring the home. If you cannot be reached, emergency personnel are alerted of the break-in within moments.

Security alarms have less false alarms than before. Thanks to advancements in technology, home security alarms are more reliable than ever. Configurations can even be made to take in to account any pets in your home so they won’t accidentally set off the alarm when you have it set.

Security systems do not just protect your home against break-ins. They can also protect your home against fires and gas leaks. If your family is not at home and a fire breaks out, this can be a real asset.

Are Screen Doors Safe?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

In the summer, when there is a cool breeze in the air, it is normal to want to open a window or door. There are various reasons for getting a screen door, but how safe are they? There are doors that are labeled secure screen doors, but how secure are they really?

Screen doors come in handy in a few ways. They allow you to enjoy the fresh breeze with out having to deal with flies and other insects coming inside your home. Screen doors can also come with a door lock for your home protection.

Screen doors, however, are not very secure as far as doors go. If you are determined to buy a screen door, be sure you do some research and find the best screen doors that aid with home protection. Normal screen doors can easily be kicked in by burglars.

First, do not fall immediately for a screen door that advertises it is a home security screen door. Many screens do not actually meet with the security industry’s standards set by the National Security Screens Association, or NSSA. To tell whether they are actually going to help with home protection or the opposite, rely on a few of these tips.

First, make sure the door is made out of sturdy material. The more flimsy the material, the easier a burglar or criminal will have kicking the door in. The best type of material is one that is tempered aluminum, or a metal that is strong and does not rust easily.

Another thing to watch out for is how many hinges are used with the door. Be sure there are at least three fixed hinges that cannot be removed. If the hinges are recessed, the better chance you will have that there won’t be a big enough gap between the door and the frame for a burglar to jimmy it open.

A lot of screens can easily be cut through, so be sure the mesh is strong enough to withstand this type of assault. The screen of the door should be made of a strong material as well. The strongest mesh grades are either 316 or 304.

Be certain that the door has a good lock. Three point door locks are a good investment because it is very difficult to force open the door or rip the door from its hinges. You can also use a solid grill on your screen door, but it is only going to be a security measure for home protection if it is secured to the frame of the door.

Is There Really a Need for a Security System in My Home?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

With today’s economy it can be hard to know what things you should really invest in. It is a time where needs and wants need to be clearly defined. This is why a lot of people are asking themselves “Do I really need a security alarm system?”

The answer to whether or not you need a security system depends on whether you put a high priority on your family’s safety and a high priority on keeping the items of your home secure. Crime rates are constantly changing and it will always be a problem. Crime, unfortunately, is one thing in this world that will never disappear.

No one will know when or if their home will be robbed. Even if your home has never had problems in the past there is no guarantee that your home won’t be a target in the future. This could happen next week, next month or never.

Having a system in place for home protection is a wonderful preventative measure to keep break-ins from happening. Alarm systems reduce the chances you have of burglary happening to you. They are also handy in a lot of other ways, including warning police of break-ins, and warning you of any gas leaks or fires in the home.

Things should be done to protect your home. Overwhelmingly the best option you have of doing so is to install a security system. Not only will an alarm give you protection, but the peace of mind that your home is secure while you are at work or at home.

Security alarms come in two systems currently. Wireless systems are the most popular option and do not need the use of cables or wires. Wired systems are systems that have cables that run through your home to connect with all the alarm sensors in your home.

The installation of wireless systems are a lot easier. Your security company will easily be able to install the wireless system inside your home within an hours time instead of days. When choosing an alarm system the wireless system is the far superior method.

Wireless systems also are more advanced. They allow for more applications to be used, such as wireless key remotes and phone applications. If you find the security company you are leaning towards is still using wired systems, it would be a good indication that they will not have the state-of-the art security advances that are good for home security systems.

Another advantage of getting an alarm system now is that they have never been so affordable. With the advances made in systems they are also more reliable than years past, and there are a drastic decrease in false alarms. Again, whether you need a security alarm system is up to you, but if you feel your home and family’s safety should be a priority it is absolutely going to be a good investment.
