My Lighter Hisses, But Wont Light

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Lighters are a requirement for smokers; unless you choose to use matches, of course. However, lighters are far more convenient than matches and also more economical. That said, butane lighters and even jet lighters can have problems with operation. One of the most common problems associated with any type of lighter is a failure to ignite, accompanied by a hissing sound.

When the igniter of the lighter is pressed down, no flame appears. The lighter does, however, emit a hissing sound, as of fuel escaping. What could be going on? Whats wrong with your lighter? Actually, this situation can be remedied quite easily, though youll need to troubleshoot your lighter a bit first.

First, check the top of the lighter to ensure that there is no debris blocking the fuel emission area. Be careful not to depress the igniter switch when doing this. Usually, a simple visual inspection is all that is required to ensure that nothing is blocking the fuel from escaping or the lighter from lighting. Once you have ensured that there is nothing obstructing the lighter from operating, youll need to move on to the next step.

Quite often, the cause of your lighters failure to ignite is not the flint, debris or a lack of fuel. Often, the problem is that you simply have the flame set too high. What is actually happening is that the force of the escaping fuel is too great for the spark to catch; effectively snuffing out your lighter before it even ignites. To determine if this is the case with your lighter, check the flame adjuster; it will be located on the back of butane models and on the bottom of jet models.

To adjust the flame height, youll need a very small flathead screwdriver. Turn the flame adjuster towards the minus symbol. Be careful not to turn it too far, though. Make a small adjustment toward the minimum end of the range and then attempt to light the lighter once more. If you still hear the hissing sound, but the lighter does not ignite, then you need to continue adjusting the flame height. You should do this in increments, in order to ensure that you are able to achieve the highest flame height for your needs, while still being able to light the lighter.

How Many Times Can I Light a Typical Cigar Lighter?

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Having a working, quality lighter is vital to enjoying your pastime. No matter whether you use torch lighters, Zippo lighters or disposable lighters, you might just find yourself wondering how many times it will light. This is an important question, as the answer will determine just how much you have to spend on lighter fluid or new lighters. How many lights does the average cigar lighter provide?

The reason there is no firm answer to this question is because lighters vary so wildly in flame configuration and flame type. In addition, some smokers take longer to light their cigars than do other smokers. Finally, you will need to understand a bit more about the process of lighting that cigar to develop a firm understanding of why you cannot answer your question adequately.

Now, at least one disposable lighter manufacturer claims that their products will light 3,000 times. This is a bit misleading. Of course, its possible to light a lighter that many times, but do not expect the average lighter to light 3,000 cigars, or even to give you that many relights. Why is there such a disparity in the provided information and reality?

The answer comes down to how long you maintain the flame, as well as the flame configuration that you use and the total amount of time needed to light your cigar. If you choose to use a double or triple jet lighter, which is a popular decision, then youll use fuel at a much faster rate than someone using a single jet lighter or a disposable lighter. However, lighting a cigar is not something that you can accomplish with speed, as it requires time to do it correctly. During the process, your lighter will remain alight, burning fuel the whole time.

Therefore, the amount of time you hold the flame on your lighter, the more fuel you will use. This will reduce the number of lights you are able to achieve from the lighter. If you demand to know how many lights you, personally, can achieve, the best option is to purchase a quality lighter and track your own usage. As the number of lights achievable will vary with each smoker, tracking your usage and results is the best way to determine the right choice in lighters for your needs.

The Proper Way to Pack a Tobacco Pipe

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Many people take up the pastime of smoking a pipe. They make sure they have a wonderful looking pipe and they buy only the best tobacco. They choose their pipe cleaners and their windproof lighters and they think they are ready to go. However, one of the most difficult things about smoking a pipe is actually getting it packed correctly.

It is very important that you keep your pipe clean at all times. If it is the first time you are smoking the pipe, you won’t have to worry about cleaning it, but you need to keep these steps in mind for all of the subsequent uses. The first thing that you want to do is to remove all of the debris and ash from the bowl of the pipe. You can dump it into an ashtray. Next, you are going to want to use a pipe cleaner through the stem of the pipe and toward the bowl to remove and clean buildup in the pipe.

When the pipe is clean, you are ready to start packing. Choose strands of tobacco that have no clumps or stems in them and then pack the bowl until it is one quarter from the top of the bowl. Tamp the tobacco down until it only takes up half the bowl and then hold a flame over the tobacco, drawing the heat into the bowl. Tamp again and then fill the bowl until it is full. Tamp once more, and then you are ready to light it. Hold the flame to the tobacco so that it is just touching and then draw through the step. This should light the tobacco and you should not have any trouble keeping it lit.

Then, take your windproof lighter and light the bowl. Keep in mind that you don’t want the flame to touch the tobacco. Puff on the stem to draw the heat to the tobacco. Next, tamp the tobacco again and then add more tobacco so that the pipe is full. Tamp it once more and then take a draw on the pipe.

You will want to make sure that you use good quality tobacco for your pipe, as this will often burn better. Always remember to keep your pipe clean and your lighter nearby, and you should have no trouble.

Taking the Band Off of a Cigar Before Smoking

Monday, May 10th, 2010

One of the most relaxing and satisfying feelings is when you finally find a few moments in the day that are all your own, when you can unwind with a nice cigar. However, cigar smoking is not as easy as just grabbing a stogie and lighting it up. You will find that there are certain traditions and even rules of etiquette that you will want to follow when smoking. Everything from choosing the type of cigar to choosing the right pipe lighters, and even whether or not to remove the band, are very important decisions that you will need to make.

To answer some of the questions, butane lighters work great for cigars and you will want to try several different brands to find the one that you like best. When it comes to the bands on the cigars, leaving them on or taking them off depends on the situation. If you are home and smoking a cigar by yourself, there is no need to remove the band ” it will have no impact on the flavor of the cigar. However, when you are out among friends or at a cigar bar, removing the band is the proper etiquette. Many believe that leaving the band on is rude.

Why would leaving the band on your cigar be rude? Well, the band contains as much information about the cigar as you would likely ever need to know. Those who are knowledgeable about cigars will be able to tell not only the brand of cigar, but also the approximate amount of money that you spent on it.

When you have an expensive cigar and leave the band on, it can look as though you are bragging about your wealth in some people’s eyes. You can avoid the envious glares of others around you by simple removing the band and enjoying your cigar.

All of the different rules of etiquette are things that you will learn over time. Taking the band off your cigar is easy. In many cases, you will be able to slip the band off the cigar even before you light it. However, you will find that the label will come off even easier when you light the cigar and smoke for a moment ” it loosens the band and will make it quite simple to slip off the cigar so that you can discard it.

What is a Good Ashtray for Cigars?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Everyone who smokes cigars, whether they are a novice or an experienced aficionado, knows that certain accessories go along with the hobby. Some of the most common items that cigar smokers need include butane lighters, humidors, and a cigar cutter. Of course, one of the most important accessories for those who smoke cigars is ashtrays. However, not just any old ashtray will do. You can’t really expect a small cigarette ashtray to hold your cigars ” after all, they are much larger than a cigarette. So, what is a good ashtray for cigars?

How do you know what type of ashtray you should get for your cigars? First, you want to find something that fits your cigars. Different cigars come in different diameters, so you want to have something large. This also means that you aren’t going to be able to get by with just a cigarette ashtray ” they just aren’t large enough. When you begin your search for a nice ashtray for your cigars, you will find that they come in a variety of materials and designs. As you choose, make sure that you find something that fits your aesthetic style as well as your cigars.

One of the most popular materials from which the ashtrays are made is glass. They are heavy and they come in many different styles and colors. Because they are heavy, you don’t have to worry about tipping the ashtray over and making a mess. Some of the ashtrays also come with holders for your other accessories. Metal is another popular choice when it comes to ashtrays for cigars. Be sure that you get a metal ashtray that is heavy, as this will avoid tipping. Some of the small, light metal ashtrays won’t be able to hold the weight of a large cigar. Also, make sure the bowl is deep enough to accommodate the cigar.

Ceramic ashtrays have been popular for a long time. Like the materials above, you will find that the ceramic ashtrays come in many different styles and colors, so it won’t be hard to find something that you like. You should remember that ceramic ashtrays are more fragile than the other materials are, but they are also often less expensive.

You will be able to find a variety of ashtrays when you start shopping. In many cases, you can find them at the same locations that you buy the cutters, lighters, and the cigars. Find something that is functional and that looks great, as well as something that will last as long as you continue smoking cigars.
